Google has won a bankruptcy auction to acquire a vast trove of enterprise data and software assets from collapsed U.S. carrier Spirit Airlines for $10 million, according to a *Bloomberg* [report](https://news.bloomberglaw.com/business-and-practice/google-aims-to-boost-ai-with-purchase-of-spirit-airlines-data?ref=theleftshift.com). Google outbid Mercor that placed a competing $7.5 million bid.

The deal gives Google access to a massive repository of de-identified business information that includes roughly 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams chats and collaboration records, as well as data covering revenue, aircraft operations, employee productivity, marketing, human resources and fraud audits.

The dataset also includes pricing information from about 7.2 billion competitor flights, an estimated 7.5 billion passenger transaction records dating back to 2008, and pricing-curve data.

Google will additionally receive roughly 30 million lines of software code, development metadata, models and algorithms, along with more than 175,000 employee records dating back to 1986.

## Why Google is buying Spirit Airlines’ data and why Spirit is selling it

Google’s $10 million purchase of Spirit Airlines’ enterprise data is less about owning an airline dataset and more about gaining access to a rare, real-world record of how a large business actually operates.

Google said the dataset could help improve its products and [AI models](https://www.theleftshift.com/iisc-researchers-unveil-ai-speech-model-covering-65-indian-languages-and-dialects/). The value for an AI company is the breadth of the information. The dataset had captured decisions, workflows, pricing, operations, and business processes over many years. That could potentially provide useful material for improving enterprise AI systems and understanding how complex organisations operate.

Google will not receive Spirit’s passenger profiles or Free Spirit loyalty-programme data, and the data will be scrubbed of personally identifiable information by a third party before transfer.

For Spirit, the sale is part of the liquidation of an airline that could no longer continue operating. The carrier shut down on May 2 after [entering its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cqxlnrqjvzyo?ref=theleftshift.com) in two years. Spirit said sharply higher oil prices and other financial pressures had severely weakened its outlook, while the company had no additional funding available.

Spirit entered the latest bankruptcy proceedings carrying about $8.1 billion in debt. Its collapse followed years of financial difficulties and an unsuccessful effort to restructure the business.
