Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has announced that former VMware CEO Raghu Raghuram is joining the firm as a General Partner and Managing Partner, marking one of the most high-profile executive additions in recent years.

Ben Horowitz, co-founder of a16z, shared the news on X, recalling hiring Raghuram nearly three decades ago at Netscape. “He was so smart that I didn’t have much to teach him about products or technology,” Horowitz wrote, calling him “the greatest infrastructure strategist in the game.”

"Excited to join a16z. I will be working with the infrastructure investing team and growth investing team to help amazing founders build the next generation of great companies," Raghuram said.

At VMware, Raghuram played a key role in transforming the company from a virtualization pioneer into a global multi-cloud leader with over $13 billion in revenue and 300,000 customers across 60 countries. He also oversaw landmark acquisitions like Nicira and led VMware through its record-breaking sale to Broadcom.

At a16z, Raghuram will hold three key roles — General Partner on the AI Infrastructure and Growth teams, and Managing Partner alongside Horowitz to help run the firm. His appointment reflects a16z’s growing focus on AI infrastructure and enterprise-scale innovation.

“This is a dream come true for me and a giant step forward for Andreessen Horowitz,” Horowitz said.
