Datadog Acquires Observability Platform Metaplane

Datadog, the $34.91 billion cloud monitoring and security giant, has acquired Metaplane, a startup known for its AI-driven data observability platform, in a move to strengthen its footprint in the growing data observability space.

The platform will continue under the new name “Metaplane by Datadog”, supporting both new and existing customers.

“Observability isn’t just for IT anymore—it’s now vital for data teams managing complex, AI-driven workflows. This acquisition will unify application and data observability, empowering companies to build more reliable AI systems," Michael Whetten, VP at Datadog, said.

Founded in 2019, Metaplane has helped companies like Bose, the Linux Foundation, and Sotheby’s proactively monitor their data pipelines and catch anomalies early using AI models trained on historical metadata.

The platform integrates with tools like Slack and PagerDuty to alert users and continuously improves by learning from user feedback on expected changes.

Metaplane had previously raised $22.2 million from investors including Khosla Ventures, Y Combinator, and Flybridge Capital.

“Joining Datadog allows us to scale our mission of building trust in data and bring observability to thousands more teams,” Metaplane co-founder Kevin Hu, said.

This marks Datadog’s second acquisition in 2025, following its January purchase of Quickwit, a cloud-native search engine for logs.

Datadog is setting up its first data center in Australia, slated to go live by mid-year. This marks a significant step in expanding Datadog’s global infrastructure, adding to existing hubs across North America, Asia, and Europe.
