ChatGPT Hits 800 Mn Weekly Users as OpenAI Unveils In-Chat Apps and More at DevDay

OpenAI has announced at DevDay 2025 that ChatGPT has now over 800 million weekly active users, a major milestone in its growth trajectory.

In August,  Nick Turley, OpenAI’s VP & head of the ChatGPT app, revealed that ChatGPT is on track to surpass 700 million weekly active users that month—up from around 500 million at the end of March and a staggering 4× increase year-over-year.

Alongside the user announcement, OpenAI introduced a suite of new features at DevDay 2025, transforming ChatGPT into a more interactive platform. The company launched Apps in ChatGPT, allowing users to interact with services like Spotify, Canva, Booking.com, Zillow, and more—all directly within a single chat interface.

Only last month, OpenAI unveiled Instant Checkout, a new feature that lets ChatGPT users buy products directly in chat.

To support developers, OpenAI also released the Apps SDK (preview), enabling them to build conversational, interactive applications that can be embedded in ChatGPT.

Other significant launches include AgentKit, aimed at enabling the creation and orchestration of AI agents, and updates to the Codex model for better code generation support.

OpenAI also revealed new API upgrades, including GPT-5 Pro, a powerful model intended for developers, and Sora 2, the next iteration of its AI video generation engine.

These moves aim to shift ChatGPT from a conversational assistant to a full-fledged AI platform, where users can discover, install, and interact with apps directly within chat.

With 4 million developers already building on OpenAI’s stack and over 6 billion tokens processed per minute, the company is positioning ChatGPT as a central hub for AI-driven interaction and development.
