Character AI Launches “Stories” — A New Interactive Storytelling Format After Barring Minors from Converse with Chatbots

AI-chat platform Character.AI today introduced Stories, a brand-new feature designed to let users create, play, and share adventures with their favourite AI characters. The new format aims to bring a “fun and visual way to play and explore through interactive fiction.”

With Stories, users choose two or three characters, select a genre, and write or auto-generate a story premise. From there, the narrative unfolds as a guided, branching adventure — with frequent decision points letting users steer the plot in different directions.

Each play-through can lead to unique outcomes, and completed Stories can be shared with friends or the wider community for others to enjoy.

This comes after the startup barred users under 18 from interacting with its chatbots, citing growing concerns around child safety and regulatory scrutiny.

Stories offer a safer, structured alternative that retains creativity and engagement. Unlike traditional chat-based interactions, Stories emphasises a visual-first, interactive format — making it easier for users to craft fiction, build worlds, and explore narratives more like games or choose-your-own-adventure tales.

The launch of Stories is part of Character.AI’s broader push into multimodal content, following recent additions like animated Scenes, video generation, and a community social feed.

With this move, Character.AI aims to evolve beyond one-on-one chat, offering users richer, more diverse modes of creative expression — while preserving safety and imaginative freedom.
