Bharti Airtel Bags $1 Bn to Expand Nxtra Data Centre Network Across India

Bharti Airtel has raised $1 billion for its data centre subsidiary Nxtra Data from global investors, highlighting surging demand for digital infrastructure driven by artificial intelligence.

The funding round includes $435 million from Alpha Wave Global, $240 million from existing investor Carlyle and $35 million from Anchorage Capital, with Airtel contributing the remaining amount. The deal values Nxtra at around $3.1 billion, according to a stock exchange filing.

The fresh capital will be used to expand Nxtra’s data centre footprint across India. The company currently operates about 300MW of capacity across 14 large facilities and over 120 edge sites, with plans to scale to 1GW in the coming years.

Gopal Vittal, executive vice chairman of Airtel, said Nxtra has developed a network of data centres tailored to enterprises, hyperscalers and government clients, as demand for computing power accelerates.

“India has an immense AI opportunity — Indians already meaningfully interact with platforms like ChatGPT, Claude and other AI tools,” said Navroz D. Udwadia, co-founder of Alpha Wave Global, adding that data centre capacity must expand to meet growing demand.

Major tech firms including Microsoft, Amazon and Google have recently announced multibillion-dollar investments in India’s cloud and AI infrastructure.

India’s total data centre capacity is projected to grow rapidly, positioning the country as a major global hub for AI-driven infrastructure.
