AWS & OpenAI Ink $38 Bn Strategic Compute Deal to Power AI Revolution
According to AWS, all initial capacity will be operational by the end of 2026, with further expansion into 2027 and beyond.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpenAI today announced a multi-year, strategic partnership, granting OpenAI access to AWS’s global compute infrastructure for training and deploying its most advanced AI systems.
The agreement — valued at approximately $38 billion over seven years — enables OpenAI to immediately begin using AWS resources as part of its next-generation AI roadmap.

Under the deal, OpenAI will deploy hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GPUs via Amazon EC2 UltraServers, with the ability to scale to tens of millions of CPUs.
According to AWS, all initial capacity will be operational by the end of 2026, with further expansion into 2027 and beyond.
“Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute,” said Sam Altman, CEO and co-founder of OpenAI. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens the broad compute ecosystem that will power this next era and bring advanced AI to everyone.”
AWS emphasised that its infrastructure has already run clusters with more than 500,000 chips and that its cloud stack is optimised for large-scale generative AI workloads with low latency and high security.
“As OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of what's possible, AWS's best-in-class infrastructure will serve as a backbone for their AI ambitions. The breadth and immediate availability of optimised compute demonstrates why AWS is uniquely positioned to support OpenAI's vast AI workloads,” Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, said.
For AWS, the collaboration signals a major strategic victory in the cloud AI race, enhancing its appeal to frontier-model providers after years of competition from Microsoft and Google.
Analysts view the deal as a vote of confidence in AWS’s capacity to serve the most demanding AI workloads.
