AWS Launches ‘Frontier Agents’ to Automate Security Testing and Cloud Operations

Amazon Web Services(AWS) has introduced a new class of autonomous AI systems, called “frontier agents,” aimed at transforming security testing and cloud operations through continuous, large-scale automation.

The announcement marks a shift from traditional AI assistants toward agentic systems that can operate independently, execute multi-step tasks and persist over long periods without constant human oversight. These agents are designed to function as extensions of engineering and security teams, handling complex workflows across cloud environments.

The initial rollout includes two core offerings: an AWS Security Agent for automated penetration testing and an AWS DevOps Agent for managing operational workflows. The Security Agent enables continuous, on-demand testing across applications and infrastructure, significantly increasing the speed and frequency of vulnerability discovery. Unlike traditional tools, it not only identifies potential weaknesses but also attempts to exploit them through multi-step attack simulations to validate real risks.

Meanwhile, the DevOps Agent focuses on incident detection, investigation and resolution. It integrates with observability and development tools to analyse system behavior, identify root causes and recommend preventive measures. The agent can respond to incidents in real time, helping reduce downtime and improve system reliability.

AWS said these frontier agents are capable of scaling across multiple tasks simultaneously and can run persistently for hours or days, adapting to changing conditions without manual intervention. This enables organisations to move from reactive operations to proactive and autonomous system management.

“I’m excited by how a frontier agent like AWS Security Agent is transforming critical workflows for our customers. They’re able to cut penetration testing time from weeks to hours, while uncovering critical vulnerabilities that traditional scanners miss. We’re using Security Agent ourselves at AWS. This is a great example of AI becoming an autonomous partner to deliver comprehensive, continuous protection,” said Amy Herzog, AWS VP, CISO.

The launch comes amid growing enterprise demand for AI-driven automation in cloud environments, where increasing system complexity and cyber threats are challenging traditional workflows. By embedding intelligence directly into security and operations processes, AWS aims to help organisations improve efficiency, reduce risk exposure and accelerate software development cycles.

"The goal is simple: give teams an always-available teammate that can handle the heavy lifting, so builders can focus on what matters most. We’re still early, but this is a big step toward more autonomous, resilient system, " Matt Garman, AWS CEO, said.

The company positions frontier agents as a foundational step toward fully autonomous cloud systems, where AI continuously monitors, secures and optimises infrastructure at scale.
