Apple Taps Google’s Gemini Models to Power Next Generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri

Apple has entered into a multi-year partnership with Google to build the next generation of Apple Foundation Models using Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models and cloud infrastructure, the companies announced on Monday.

According to the companies, Apple evaluated several alternatives before selecting Google’s technology as the underlying foundation. “After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google’s AI technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models,” Google said in a statement. “These models will help unlock new experiences for Apple users.”

Last year, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said during testimony at an antitrust trial in Washington that Google is aiming to finalise a deal with Apple to integrate its Gemini AI into upcoming iPhones.

Apple said Apple Intelligence will continue to function within its tightly controlled ecosystem, running on Apple devices and through its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.

“Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards,” the company said, reiterating that user data will not be stored or used to train external models.

The partnership signals a shift in Apple’s AI strategy. Until now, Apple Intelligence has relied primarily on in-house foundation models introduced in 2024 and optimised for on-device processing on Apple silicon. Those models handled tasks such as text summarisation, rewriting, image generation and incremental Siri improvements, with more complex requests routed to Apple’s private cloud.

The agreement also strengthens Google’s role as a supplier of foundation models and cloud infrastructure to major technology companies. Gemini is Google’s flagship family of AI models and is already embedded across products such as Search, Workspace and Android.

Apple did not disclose financial terms or specify which Gemini versions will be used.
