Anthropic to Open Bengaluru Office in 2026, Boost Indic-AI Capabilities

Anthropic, the AI startup behind Claude, is expanding significantly in India as demand surges. The company confirmed it will open its first office in Bengaluru in early 2026, part of a broader push to grow operations in its second-largest market.

India now represents about 7.2% of Claude’s global usage, making it a critical region for Anthropic’s international strategy.

Last month, in their Anthropic Economic Index report, the startup pointed out that India’s usage of AI tools is overwhelmingly dominated by software development tasks.

To support localised demand, Anthropic is planning to hire a country lead for India, bolster its applied-AI team, and deepen work on Indic language support.

Co-Founder and CEO Dario Amodei will visit India to engage with officials and potential partners. The move aligns with Anthropic’s mission to build AI tools that are both advanced and responsibly deployed in diverse contexts.

“India is compelling because of the scale of its technical talent and the commitment from the Indian government to ensure the benefits of artificial intelligence reach all areas of society, not just concentrated pockets. There is deep alignment between the challenges India is tackling and our mission as a company, from deploying AI across diverse languages and contexts, to building frameworks for responsible governance,” he said.

Globally, Anthropic aims to triple its international workforce and increase its applied AI team five-fold this year to meet accelerating demand. The startup’s enterprise customer base has swollen from under 1,000 to over 300,000 in two years, with nearly 80% of Claude usage now originating outside the U.S.

By establishing a formal presence in India and investing in local infrastructure and language support, Anthropic hopes to cater more effectively to Indian enterprises, developers, and public sector use cases.

Teams will focus on local deployments, regulatory compliance, and tailored AI solutions to match regional needs.
