Anthropic Says Users Can Now Switch to Claude From ChatGPT Without Losing Chat History
The memory feature, now available on Claude’s free plan, allows users to copy and paste a provided prompt into another AI service to extract conversation history and preferences.
Anthropic has introduced a new feature that allows users to switch to its AI assistant, Claude, without restarting conversations or manually re-entering preferences. The update enables users to transfer stored context from rival chatbots, including ChatGPT and Gemini, in a single step.
The memory feature, now available on Claude’s free plan, allows users to copy and paste a provided prompt into another AI service to extract conversation history and preferences.
“With one copy-paste, Claude updates its memory and picks up right where you left off,” the company said.
The migration process involves pasting a specially formatted prompt into an existing AI assistant to retrieve saved context. Users then copy the output into Claude’s memory settings, allowing the system to update preferences before continuing new conversations.
Anthropic positioned the feature as a way to simplify switching between AI platforms, reducing friction for users who want continuity without repeating instructions.
The rollout comes amid intensifying competition in the AI assistant market. According to data from Sensor Tower, ChatGPT mobile app uninstallations in the U.S. surged 295% day-on-day following news of OpenAI’s partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense, while Claude downloads rose sharply after Anthropic stated it would not pursue a defense partnership.
