Amazon’s Zoox Issues Another Recall After Robotaxi Crash in San Francisco

Amazon’s self-driving car unit Zoox has issued a second voluntary software recall this month after one of its autonomous vehicles was involved in a crash with an electric scooter in San Francisco on May 8.

The robotaxi, which was unoccupied and braking at an intersection, was hit by the scooter. The rider sustained minor injuries.

"Zoox operations personnel met the individual quickly on the scene to exchange information and offer medical attention for minor injuries, which was declined," Zoox said in a blog post.

Although the Zoox vehicle was stationary at the time of impact, it resumed movement briefly after the scooter rider fell beside it.

The company has submitted a voluntary recall report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affecting 270 vehicles.

Earlier this month, the company issued a voluntary software recall following an April 8 crash involving one of its robotaxis in Las Vegas.

The company recalled around 270 vehicles with the affected software version, citing the system’s inability to accurately predict other vehicles’ behavior.
